Betrayal and Trial

Luke 22:37-71 and Luke 23:1-24 are the passages I will be writing from, so I suggest reading them.

Betrayal.
Have you ever been betrayed by someone? Maybe even a close friend or family member?

If you have then you have a glimpse of how Jesus felt. He invested His life here on earth into twelve men, teaching them, helping them, living everyday life with them....
but then the betrayal happened

Judas betrayed Jesus. He went to the Pharisees and for money he betrayed Jesus.

But after Jesus was led away something else happened. Peter denied Jesus.
You might ask, why would Peter deny Jesus? He did because a few verses before (Luke 22:31-34, 39-46) Jesus told him and the others to pray that they would not fall into temptation.
And what did Peter and the other disciples do? They fell asleep.
Peter relied on his own strength and not God's strength and he didn't pray.

That shows that we should pray.

Let's take a trip into that week, picture this :

You stand in the fierce crowd, looking around, trying to take it all in. Jesus, the One who you believed would deliver you from the Romans was on trial.
Pilate asks, 'Barabbas or Jesus to be released to you?'
You are surprised to hear yourself yell, 'Barabbas!'
When Pilate asked what should be done to this Jesus, you are shocked to hear your own voice shout 'crucify Him! Crucify Him!'.

Back to the present....
It was a tradition in that time to release one criminals... Barabbas was a murderer. Jesus had done nothing wrong.

But Barabbas was released and Jesus was whipped and led away to be hung on a cross.

Later this week we will go into Jesus' death and next week His resurrection.
